Why Marco Reus will leave Dortmond this summer. New deal scam.
Marco Reus this week is reported to have signed a new contract with Dortmond. In a move that is largely perceived by fans and journalists alike as one that cements his future with the German Giants, the highly sought after player was quoted as saying '"I am very happy with my decision. Dortmund is my home city and Borussia is simply my club."I am looking forward to a successful future with our team and our fantastic fans behind us. We have a lot to do."
However, I will not be convinced until I see him play for them next season. Marco Reus's erstwhile contract with Dortmond before he signed a new deal was to expire this year. If his contract had expired without him signing a new one, it would have meant that he would have been a free agent at the end of this season, thus entitling him to leave the club with no remuneration due to Borussia Dortmond. This situation is what I believe has necessitated this new contract by the club. It is simply a move by Borrusia Dortmond to ensure that it is not short changed by the situation. The new contract means that Dortmond is contractually entitled to Reus's services until 2019, with the provision for any team who wants his services to meet its 'buy-out clause', and in effect buy Reus out of his contract with Dortmond. This clause is usually set at an outrageously high price and it is then up to an interested party to negotiate the figure to a more reasonable fee which will be convenient for all parties interested. What is important is that we realize that a contract is an agreement between parties which can be waived for valuable consideration. It is not absolute in that sense.
My belief is premised on Borussia Dortmond's current position on the table, which makes it very unlikely for the club to play Champions League football next season which is the number one priority for all top players in world football today. Let us not also forget that Luis Suarez, Thierry Henry and Gareth Bale all signed new contracts for their teams before eventually departing for greener pastures in the summer. The practice is indeed very common in the contemporary money driven world of football.
The move can thus be seen as a smart business move by Borussia Dortmond and all parties involved in the deal.
