Check out football's first ever formation.

So, I was having a conversation with an elderly person about football player positions. He seemed not to know what he was talking about.
So I expressed my concern to him, telling him that I didn't understand the positions he was talking about. I then asked him what formation the positions were based on. He told me it was 2-3-5.He said 2-3-5 was the first successful football formation.I laughed it off. Surely, no sane football team would play such open attacking football with little regard to the defence and midfield.I was sure that football's first ever formation was 4-4-2. He then drew up the above 2-3-5 formation for me, explaining to me that his school football team,St Patrick's College in Delta State, played with that formation. So I decided to check out the formation for myself. To my surprise he was correct. The formation referred to as the 'pyramid' was the first ever successful football formation. It was first recorded in 1880 and by 1890 was the most widely used formation in England and the rest of the world. The formation was used widely from then and gradually declined in popularity in the 1940's. The 4-4-2 formation only became popular in the early 90's. You learn something everyday.
