Following a violent riot in the football game between Olympiakos and Panathaniakos over the weekend, the Greek Governemt has decided that all activities relating to professional football in the country are suspended indefinitely.
The action was also necessitated by a fight that ensued between club officials at Greece's Super League Board meeting held on Tuesday. The Athens derby over the weekend, between the powerhouses of Greek football is one of many violent displays that have become associated with Greek football over the years.
Super League President, Giorgos Borivilos is quoted as saying.
'What we have been informed is that the Super League and the Football League have been suspended indefinitely.'
'We have a new government who are looking to bring this subject up for discussion and implement state laws related to it.'
'The government wants games to start again as soon as possible, but for
that they want to see immediate reactions from all of us.'
Hopefully, the ban on football will have a positive effect.Violence being barbaric and ugly has no place in the sport widely referred to as the 'beautiful game' .
